Peter Reuter

Peter Reuter is Professor in the School of Public Policy and in the Department of Criminology at the University of Maryland. From 1999 to 2004 he was editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. He is also Senior Economist at RAND and Resarch Fellow of IZA.

Dr. Reuter founded and directed RAND’s Drug Policy Research Center from 1989-1993.  Most of his research has dealt with alternative approaches to controlling drug problems, both in the United States and Western Europe. His six books include (with Robert MacCoun) Drug War Heresies: Learning from Other Places, Times and Vices (Cambridge University Press, 2001and (with Letizia Paoli and Victoria Greenfield) The World Heroin Market (Oxford University Press, 2009).

Dr. Reuter was the founding president of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy, which was created in 2007.  He has served on a number of Institute of Medicine and National Research Council Committees.  Dr. Reuter received his PhD in Economics from Yale.
